Granted nearly 1 CM of ice is a lot of ice, but its not really THAT much if you, say, go skiing and a plow drives by your car one time. After that yeah there is going to be about an inch of frozen muck on your door.

A more realistic scenario

If only there was a clever way to allow that and still have access to the door entry handle........

I’ve seen an ice storm put a layer more than 1cm thick on cars but unlocking them in those circumstances is just the start of your issues.

Since I’m not a snow monster, I am unfamiliar with this issue, but I wonder if regular handles would work as will if bathed in 1cm of water and frozen..

Also, what about them tesla xs with the sensors that unlock and open the doors, perhaps it’s just better that way anyway

With the inch or more of slush and frozen ice, I doubt these motorized (actuator?) handles would last very long or just refuse to operate. I guess the fail safe would be a remote start so the cab can heat up and thaw out the doors. It’s a nice entry design but a manual failsafe would be nice to know about.

I can tell you my underslung handles work fine snow covered and ice covered. Even thick ice.

Another reason why Range Rovers are for Beverly Hills housewives and not off road expeditions.

We get thick ice build up here in Portland a couple times a year on average. Heavy rain during the day, turns into freezing rain at night, voila thick ass ice on everything.

A mid west ice storm can easily drop 1/4" of ice, sometimes more. Even regular door handles become nearly useless or shatter when it you get that much ice. Especially when you start with a warm car or it partially thaws and refreezes. However, that issue is kind of outside the target demo for this car.

I snapped two keys the first year with the Miata when we had some temps in the low teens. That’s when I started leaving the door unlocked. I also shattered my rear (plastic) glass, then eventually shattered the plexiglass replacement I fabricobbled. Cold weather takes its toll...
